Work Centre, working at the Desta Power Matla contract.
Right
from the start he showed potential and was eager to learn. Today
Richard no longer has to stand in a queue to collect a
disability grant, but instead, earns a salary that can make his
dreams come true. Well done, Richard! |

CONDOLENCES TO THE FAIRHEAD FAMILY
Orion wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the Fairhead
family and everybody at Fairheads International on the untimely
and sudden death of Peter Fairhead on 22 March 2009.
Not only
was Peter a donor, but more important, a true friend and mentor
to those working with people with disabilities. It was a
privilege to know him and he will be sorely missed by all. |

THE COMMUNITY REACHING OUT TO ORION
During the past few months, Orion was visited by 2 school
groups. Robinvale Secondary School pupils had to fight back the
tears whilst spending time with our children at Wilge, and could
not hide their excitement when learning about the great
potential and abilities of the adults in the Contract Work
section. On 31 March, 30 grade 6 learners from Goodwood Park
Primary School surprised everybody with Easter eggs, coffee mugs
and gorgeous soft toys for the children. What a wonderful
experience it was when everybody sang together with our Wilge
children. These visits serve an important purpose to break down
stigmas and victimisation associated with disabilities. |

GOODBYE, RICHARD!
It was a sad day when groundsman, Richard Sampson and his wife,
Irma, said their goodbyes to Orion. Richard and his family lived
on the premises for 5 years, and became part of the Orion
family. Unfortunately Richard had to go on early retirement for
health reasons, but we are fortunate that the family settled
down just around the corner from Orion. We wish him a speedy
recovery and happy retirement years ahead. |

WELCOME, JOHN WILSON AND FAMILY
Orion was very fortunate in finding a wonderful couple, John and
Colleen Wilson, to follow in Richard’s footsteps. John is no
stranger to Orion, and assisted the maintenance team on a
regular basis with all kinds of handyman jobs before joining
Team Orion on a permanent basis. The Wilsons look forward to
their stay at Orion, and their total commitment is already
showing after normal working hours, when they spend some
voluntary leisure time with the residents.
Left: Here John is in action, giving the contract building a
face lift. |

POLYOAK DONATION
Polyoak’s MD, Jeremy McIntosh, and Group Marketing Executive,
Suzanne Dingley, could hardly contain their excitement when they
broke the good news that R130 000 was made available to build a
swimming pool for the residents. On 27 March, Neil Weston (MD-Hangerman),
and life-long friend of Orion, Tom McLaughlin (Woolworths),
joined Polyoak and Orion for lunch at The River Cafe,
Constantia, where the cheque was handed over. Thank you, Polyoak,
for making this dream come true! |

VOLUNTEERS FROM GERMANY
Started during 2005, the Orion Friendship Circle only had
positive spin-offs for the organisation. Initiated by our main
German sponsors, Dr Gert & Marion Maichel, and SA patron, Alida
Raubenheimer, many volunteers joined Orion during the past few
years, benefiting both students and the organisation. Recently
Stephanie and Anneke completed their social work internships at
Orion. They will be missed, especially by the adults at the
Activity Centre. |

socks when their baby girl arrived. Patrick and Anthea got
married some 3 years ago and their biggest dream came true when
little Althea was born. The couple met each other many years ago
when joining Orion in the Contract Work section. |
