A father-and-son team, Ivan and Eugene Cloete, joined CNC Solutions (at Sabelco Engineering) in Montague Gardens recently. They were trained at the various Orion Work Centres over the last few years and today they are proud Sabelco employees. They now no longer have to queue for their disability grants as they now earn competitive salaries and are able to provide for their families’ needs! Well done, Ivan and Eugene!

NICK VUJICIC VISITS ORION, 26 October 2008:
Nick Vujicic and his team from the USA visited Orion recently and what an incredible experience!

He shared with us his story “From no limbs to no Limits”. It's the story of a very brave man, that was born 26 years, without arms or legs.

Nick decided at a very young age not to ever be dependant on others, never to beg for money or to ever give up. Instead, he used what little was given to him to reach his full potential. Today, he boasts a financial degree, he is a successful businessman and he travels the world to motivate and encourage others.

It was a very special moment when an Orion Supervisor, Karel Smith, who lost both his legs in a train accident 10 years ago, embraced Nick on stage. There was not a dry eye in the audience when Nick said, “Karel, you will have to give me a hug, buddy, because at least you have both your arms!”.

ORION GALA on 1 November 2008:
There was magic in the air, when when the curtain raised at The Rotunda Ball Room in the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, and South African Diamond Diva, Aviva Pelham and Viva the Voices entered onto the stage with the Wilge children for an opening event like none other. They gave an emotional repertoire of Josh Groban's “You raise me up!”.

To compliment the theme the 250 guests stepped out in their finest evening wear and ball gowns. The multi-award winning entertainer, Soli Philander had everyone in stitches in true South African style. The keynote speaker, the blind global Adventurer and Motivational Speaker, shared his journey of pain, courage and love to the delight of all who attended the evening.

Once again, the annual Orion Gala was the highlight of the year. A heartfelt THANK YOU, to all our donors and friends for supporting this unforgettable event.

Ball donation: Cedar Lifestyle Group
Tea-time and lunch hour have taken on a new meaning! The Cedar Lifestyle Group has donated soccer balls, which means no-one is wasting a moment to sit around. Everyone’s taking part in the fun. Even the CEO joins in when she has the time and like the rest she’s doing it to stay fit and healthy.

CEO Magazine Award – 25 August 2008
On 25 August 2008 Orion CEO, Lizelle Van Wyk, was crowned by the prestigious CEO Magazine. She was nominated as the top CEO in Welfare & Related Services in the magazine’s competition: “SA’s most Influential Women in Business and Government”. Congratulations to Lizelle for her commitment and dedication to the organisation over the past 10 years. Under her leadership, Orion is going from strength to strength, and the recognition that comes with this award, is well-deserved.

TROLLIES – MAY 08: It’s raining trollies

STRIPFORM PACKAGING – August 2008
Orion is well-known for its positive team spirit. When Stripform Packaging needed a huge order to be delivered at very short notice, everybody joined hands – even the German baker, Damaris Wenzel, to assist the contract work and admin teams to get the work out before the deadline. This just goes to show that if you want to get the work done, you should ask Orion to do it!

WOMEN’S DAY AT CAMPHILL – 05 August 2008
We could not ask for a more beautiful sunshiny day when the ladies from Orion and Camphill celebrated Women’s day with a High Tea at Camphill. The coffee shop nearly burst at the seams when almost 50 women joined to celebrate their femininity.

Master Illusionist and Motivational Speaker, Wolfgang Riebe had everybody in stitches with his magical talents, Shireen Dollie shared some encouraging words of wisdom, Lizelle and Priscilla rounded the day off with their singing talents and Alida Raubenheimer held the reigns on the special program.

Camphill’s bakery made some very delectable breads and cheeses, while Orion’s bakery piled on the calories with some decadent confectionery. Each guest received a lovely gift, provided by various sponsors. We simply cannot wait for next year’s Women’s Day!

NEW BUILDING
It gives us great pleasure to report that the new contracts building was officially opened on 05 June 2008. Our volunteers from Germany, Dorothee and Damaris, initiated an art project with the trainees to create awareness on Health & Safety with various colourful posters. The new building provides much needed, additional work and training space for the Income Generating Projects.
