ORION GALA on
1 November 2008:
There was magic in the air, when when the
curtain raised at The Rotunda Ball Room in the Bay Hotel in
Camps Bay, and South African Diamond Diva, Aviva Pelham and Viva
the Voices entered onto the stage with the Wilge children for an
opening event like none other. They gave an emotional repertoire
of Josh Groban's “You raise me up!”.
To compliment the theme the 250 guests stepped out in their
finest evening wear and ball gowns. The multi-award winning
entertainer, Soli Philander had everyone in stitches in true
South African style. The keynote speaker, the blind global
Adventurer and Motivational Speaker, shared his journey of pain,
courage and love to the delight of all who attended the evening.
Once again, the annual Orion Gala was the highlight of the year.
A heartfelt THANK YOU, to all our donors and friends for
supporting this unforgettable event. To view more photos of this

Gala 2007
Each year, our Fundraising Gala provides an opportunity for
friends, family, staff and donors alike to let their hair down
and celebrate the Spirit of Orion with us. This year was no
different. Gala 2007 was a Medieval festival of kings, queens,
knights and jesters, entertaining the crowd with music, art,
comedy and illusion.

Our patron, Dr Gert Maichel, joined us all the way from Germany
to celebrate this evening, together with his South African
counterparts, Lou and Alida.
He was joined by Annelie Bohlender and Peter Kullmann, and Peter
produced a spectacular Action Painting to the rhythm of guest
artist Bianca Le Grange’s amazing performance. Peter and Annelie
also spent two days at Orion creating beautiful artworks with
our disabled beneficiaries.
The evening’s entertainment did not stop there. Guests were
treated to side-splitting humour by Marc Lottering, and the
Master of Ceremonies was Wolfgang Riebe, Master Illusionist. His
tongue-in-cheek gags and witty one-liners ensured that the pace
of the evening never slowed down! Our local ballroom champions,
Ulrich and Sade, also treated the guests to a lovely Latin dance
item to open the dance floor.

Another highlight was the key note address by the Hon. Mayor
Helen Zille, who delivered a very personal speech and showed
that disability is a cause which is close to her heart.
The evening was indeed a joyous celebration of everything that
makes Orion special; the premiere of our new DVD reminded
everyone that Orion is a calling. The touching words of our
Patrons, the Mayor, as well as Lizelle’s welcome speech, all
served as testament to the fact that we are all part of this
wonderful Circle and everyone’s contribution, however big or
small, makes a difference in our life.
Thank you to everyone who attended, to our guest artists, and to
the Orion staff who worked so hard to make the evening a success
- You are truly appreciated! Book early to make sure you have a
front row seat at our next Gala…
